On 2011, 9, 23, Youyou Tu, a lifetime researcher at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, received her award at the Lasker Award ceremony in New York City. On that day, the prestigious international medical prize known as the "barometer" for the Nobel Prize—the Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award—was presented to 84-year-old Youyou Tu for 2011 years of clinical research. The award honored her "discovery of artemisinin, a drug that treats malaria and has saved millions of lives worldwide." This marks the first time a Chinese scientist has received the Lasker Award, and it remains the highest global honor ever awarded to China's biomedical community.
